Pacific Basin Needs
People of the Pacific Basin, because of isolation and impoverishment, are often unserved or underserved by eye care practitioners, and face urgent needs for the prevention and treatment of vision loss and blindness due to conditions such as cataracts, pterygium (related to sun exposure), diabetic retinopathy, and corneal trauma.
As our organization grows, we are asked to expand our reach to countries beyond the Pacific. Please help us add these invitations to our expedition calendar next year by donating now!
We only work in villages and communities to which we are invited. Our roles can vary in each country, but we are generally asked to:
- Assist a doctor or hospital where patients are too many.
- Teach modern techniques to doctors without much experience.
- Assess clinics and make them more efficient in caring for the poor.
- Provide care in an area without any eye care workers.
New Programs
Beginning in 2015, we have introduced two new pillars of our organization that promote longevity:
- Sustainable Clinic establishment providing jobs to local healthcare workers and primary eye care local patients in HEF’s absence.
- Telemedicine communication assisting and teaching local doctors from afar.
