Hawai’i Cataract Days

Cataract Days for Sight:

Since our inaugural event in 2017, we have partnered with local Ophthalmologists who have generously donated their time, services and supplies to conduct free cataract surgeries for those who are uninsured or underinsured.

This project is especially for those who do not have or cannot obtain medical insurance. We will also accept those who meet a list of eligibility requirements, including a household income of less than 200% of the poverty level.

Our goal is to give the gift of sight to those who would otherwise be unable to obtain such services. This will give them the chance to care for themselves and branch out into the workforce.

Cataract Days V, free cataract eye surgery for Hawaii’s patients in need, is scheduled for September 4, 2021.  Exams and clearance appointments will be scheduled prior to this date for qualifying patients that have met with HEF staff. The volunteer surgical team will be led in 2021 by Eye Surgery Center of Hawaii. This program is funded by a generous 5-year grant from the Atherton Family Foundation and WikiVision, a local nonprofit founded by local students.
To apply for this service, please contact us by email at contact@hawaiianeyefoundation.org or by leaving a message on our office line at (808) 536-3961. All communication is coordinated through Hawaiian Eye Foundation/Project Vision Hawaii.  Please do not call the surgeon directly.  If you know someone in need of eye care, that is un- or under-insured, homeless, migrant, unemployed, or unable to afford for care due to financial hardship, please refer them to us for an upcoming Cataract Days event.
We wish to continuously extend our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to our former Cataract Days’ surgeons.  The first Cataract Days was hosted by HEF BOD Dr. Chris Tortora of Hawaiian Eye Center.  He and his staff, led by Jocelyn Morales-Onza, set the bar high with their excellent service in our first year’s event.  In 2018, Dr. Tyrie Jenkins and Dr. Jeff Peterson, of Jenkins Eye Care, with the help of their office manager, Pam Utu, were incredible to work with at the 2nd annual event. In 2019, we were blessed to work with Dr. Alan Faulkner of Aloha Laser Vision and his office staff, led by Dr. Mau, Office Manager Leona and Keala.  Year 4 in 2020 was held at the Hawaiian Eye Center in Wahiawa, now owned by Dr. Steven Rhee.  Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was rescheduled and held September 17, 2020!  Our deepest appreciation to Dr. Rhee and his amazing staff for making this happen this year!  We feel so honored to have been given this opportunity to give sight during these very uncertain times.  All of our surgeons and their professional staff have truly been miracle workers!  Mahalo nui loa to each and every member of these teams!
