Press Release:

The Hawaiian Eye Foundation has just returned from a surgical and training mission to Yap, Micronesia. From May 11-20, 2018, Dr. John Corboy, Dr. Jeff Rutgard, Dr. Margie Debenedictis, Dr. Bill Hewak and Darrah Kauhane traveled to share vision skills to the future eye care providers of Yap, and to provide free eye care to hundreds of locals in need.

Yap is one of four states that make up the Federated States of Micronesia. In May 2017, the Hawaiian Eye Foundation (HEF) was invited to determine the needs of this underserved community. We are now well underway with the establishment of a self-sustainable eye clinic for these rural island villages. With only 5 doctors in the state, no ophthalmologists, and a nursing staff that strives to do their best with limited resources on each of the 22 inhabited islands/atolls, our goal is to spread hope and aloha to the villages by sending mission teams to train locals and provide care.

Many children lose their eyes unnecessarily because of trauma or infection. Many live in darkness unnecessarily due to cataracts. Many have impaired vision and cannot provide for their families because of treatable eye conditions. We want Yapese to know that their well-being is a priority. HEF has partnered with the Yap Department of Health, and has pledged a longterm commitment to grow an eye care program throughout the state. The goal is to train Yapese health workers to provide vision care in the new local HEF eye clinic so that care is always available for future generations.

With the support of our friends at the BFF Foundation, Dr. James Hung, Dr. Gardner Quarton, Jay Bradford of IIO Hawa’i, Reichert Technologies, Allergan and the South Everett Mukilteo Rotary Club, we are making substantial progress by training half of all health care workers in the state in eye trauma treatments, and by opening Yap’s first eye clinic during UNESCO’s International Day of Light.

“Light has little meaning if it can’t be detected,” is a profound statement noted by one of HEF’s Advisory Board members, Dr. William Hewak.  HEF believes that it can be a light to those currently living in darkness.  With public and private donations, HEF is able to allay the fear of those shadows currently seen because of vision loss.  HEF is thrilled to partner with UNESCO, to feature HEF’s efforts to fight curable blindness. Together, they will continue to bring light to the world.
